The self-adhesive label market keeps expanding
Self-adhesive labels are an essential packaging identification material in widespread use across the globe. Driven by the booming logistics, e-commerce, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and personal care industries, demand for self-adhesive labels continues to grow.
Globally, the label printing market keeps expanding at a compound annual growth rate of about 4%. Asia is the strongest-growing region by both market size and potential, holding the largest share of the global label market. Although China's label industry started relatively late, its output value has long grown at above-average rates, making it one of the fastest-growing label markets in the world.
Demand structure by end use
Among end-use sectors, food and beverage are the largest markets for self-adhesive labels, accounting for 24% and 12% of demand respectively, followed by transport and logistics, retail, and health and personal care.
Notably, the rapid growth of e-commerce has sharply increased demand for variable information printed (VIP) labels. Compared with traditional carbonless waybills, the new self-adhesive VIP labels (electronic waybills) offer faster output and easier logistics tracking; they now cover virtually the entire express delivery sector and account for about 47% of the self-adhesive label market.
Green development becomes a key trend
Against increasingly strict environmental regulations and rising consumer awareness, green sustainability has become a key direction for the label industry:
Environment-friendly adhesives: as a new generation of adhesive technology, UV-curable hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives offer 100% solids content, zero VOC emissions and energy savings, and are progressively replacing solvent-based and emulsion pressure-sensitive adhesives.
Degradable materials: research on degradable adhesives has made progress; paired with suitable facestocks, labels can decompose naturally after disposal without harming the environment.
Lightweight design: advances in material technology keep reducing label stock weight while preserving performance, cutting resource consumption.
Recycling-friendly design: some new label adhesives are engineered to separate easily during recycling, reducing contamination of recycled materials.
Labels keep gaining functionality
Beyond traditional identification, self-adhesive labels are becoming multifunctional. Anti-counterfeiting labels, thermochromic labels and RFID smart labels are upgrading rapidly to meet the individual needs of different industries.
Film-based self-adhesive labels continue to expand in mid-to-high-end markets. PET and PP films — with excellent transparency, water and oil resistance, and print quality — are increasingly favored in personal care, pharmaceutical and similar applications.
Industry outlook
Looking ahead, the self-adhesive label industry will keep developing along three lines: green technologies maturing and spreading to push the industry toward sustainability; continuous innovation in functional labels to meet demand for intelligent labeling; and steady gains in production efficiency and automation that help label converters cut costs and raise quality.
For labeling machine manufacturers, an expanding self-adhesive label market means sustained demand. Meanwhile, advances in label materials and adhesive technologies place higher demands on machine adaptability and precision. Keeping pace with material technology and continuously refining machine performance is how equipment makers stay competitive.
